PERFORMER BIOS
FRIDAY
Ernestine Anderson - From intimate trio formats to big band, she does it all with seductive sophistication. Her sultry, sensuous voice is intimate in small club settings and soars with passionate intensity in the festival arena. Whether it’s Ellington or Sting, Ms. Anderson’s interpretation of a song is infectious. On stage, she’s charming and vivacious, her joy in the music delighting audiences from Sweden to Japan.
Ms. Anderson has recorded more than 30 albums, performed at all the major jazz festivals, and has received four Grammy nominations. She was one of 75 women chosen for the book, I Dream a World: Portraits of Black Women Who Changed America, by Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Brian Lanker, joining such company as Rosa Parks, Leontyne Price, Barbara Jordan, and Toni Morrison.
SATURDAY
Benny Powell is a journeyman trombonist whose bold sound bridges bebop and swing. His work employs the vocal color of great swing trombonists and the technical fluidity of bop practitioners. Powell plays both tenor trombone and the bigger-bored bass trombone broadening the colors he brings to an ensemble. Known exclusively as a sideman, he’s made valuable contributions to several notable bands, ranging from the rocking swing of Lionel Hampton to the roots-informed avant-garde of John Carter. A native of New Orleans, Powell started performing professionally at 14. By age 18, he had joined Lionel Hampton, and three years later he left to join the Count Basie Orchestra just as Basie was re-establishing his band as one of the benchmarks of the field.
Catherine Russell is a native New Yorker, born with an enviable musical pedigree. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was born in Panama and moved to New Orleans and then New York City, becoming a pioneering pianist/bandleader, and Louis Armstrong’s long-time musical directory. Her mother, Carline Ray, is an outstanding bassist and vocalist and holder of advanced degrees from Julliard and Manhattan School of Music, who has performed with Mary Lou Williams and Wynton Marsalis. Not surprisingly considering her roots, Catherine Russell is a one of a kind vocalist. She has toured the world, performing and recording with a wide array of trend setting artist, including Paul Simon, David Bowie, Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, Jackson Browne and Rosanne Cash.
Marcus McLaurine is a bassist, composer, leader and sideman, who has become one of the most sought-after artists in jazz, sharing bandstands with Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Burrell, James Moody, Lou Donaldson, Dame Cleo Laine, Joe Williams, Jon Hendricks, Abbey Lincoln and the Count Basie Orchestra. For the past 25 years, Marcus has toured with legendary trumpeter Clark Terry.
T.K.Blue is a saxophonist of the highest caliber who is at the peak of his creative output. Mr. Blue’s artistry is found on over sixty recordings and has performed with a long list of great international artists such as Don Cherry, Abdullah Ibrahim, Sam Rivers, Archie Shepp, Randy Weston, Dizzy Gillespie, Pharoah Sanders, Melba Liston, Johnny Copeland, Billy Higgins, Reggie Workman, Chico Hamilton, Stefon Harris, Eric Reed, Regina Carter, Bobby McFerrin, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Benny Powell, James Moody, Paquito d’Rivera, and Jimmy Scott, just to name a few.
Daniel Mixon is a prolific piano virtuoso. Danny has worked with such legendary performers as Lionel Hampton, Charles Mingus, Dannie Richmond, Joe Williams, and Frank Foster, and continues to be in Frank’s Loud Minority Big Band and his Non-Electric Company. Danny also plays, composes, and arranges for his own group “The Danny Mixon Trio.” He has also performed, toured and/or recorded with Yusef Lateef, Hank Crawford, Savion Glover, Pharoah Sanders, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Stanley Turrentine, Gene Ammons, Eubie Blake, Noel Pointer, Jimmy Witherspoon, Grant Green, Eddie Jefferson, Charles McPherson, Marlena Shaw, Irene Reid, Houston Person, Dakota Staton, Ben Vereen, Leon Tomas, Chaka Khan, Cassandra Wilson, Lou Rawls, Gloria Lynne, Lisle Atkinson, Oscar Brown, Jr., John Hendricks, Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers, Earl May, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Kenny Dorham and many others.
SUNDAY
Skip Parsons has been swinging the Northeast and other areas since 1956 playing clubs, dances and festivals. You can expect to hear some Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Hoagy Carmichael, George Gershwin, Walter Donaldson, Glenn Miller, and on and on ….
They have a repertoire of music from the 30’s and 40’s …They even touch on music from the 20’s, and 50’s, with perhaps a hint of Latin and the Blues. They cater to up-beat, medium and slower music to keep you on your feet and swingin’.
The music is danceable, listenable, happy, and sweet hot!!!
Dancing to live music is exciting; please help support it.
Bring a friend or 2, especially those who would like to get started with swing dancing.
Plus there are lots of other dance events. See below for all the details.
